Hair is a feature everyone wants to maintain beautifully, keep the mane as best and healthy. The global hair care industry at present is a multi billion-dollar one, which is expected to be. People around the world, almost every living individual are conscious of the appearance of hair and seek the best of products to enhance the hair. Here are some tips for healthy hair through Ayurveda.

With pollution in the atmosphere, hormonal factors and using chemical-based products, people witness a lot of hair fall, greying of hair or thinning. In such a state, Ayurvedic treatment processes are beneficial and good for combating hair fall and hair loss. The processes of Ayurveda include a holistic approach to healing and rejuvenation. The products and treatments used in Ayurveda are 100% natural and addresses the root causes of hair problems.

Ayurvedic Oil based on Dosha type:

Ayurveda says the body is made up of a combination of three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Hair, likewise, will react to a particular Dosha type. As such, it is important for a person to find out the Dosha type so that the right Ayurvedic oil and treatment fall in place and gives the desired effects to the person.

Vata hair – This hair type is thin in volume and is coarse in texture. The hair grows rapidly and is generally curly, straight or anything in between. This hair type is much more difficult to tame as per the wish.

Pitta hair – This hair type is generally thick, softer in texture, and straight. One can let loose the strands or also style it.

Kapha hair – This hair type is coarse in texture and is quite full and thick in its volume. The hair is curly and is one of the most desirable hair types.

How to treat Hair Imbalances and Issues through Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the imbalances in hair health are considered as symptoms of some health conditions. As hair is interlinked with the body and organs, any ill health in a body part leads to hair damage. Ayurveda helps to cure these issues through its treatments and therapies. It stresses on giving the right nourishment and proper care to the body as a whole. 

1. Hair loss by Vata Imbalance:

The ones with Vata dosha need regular Ayurvedic oil massages at least once a week. Sesame or almond oil is the best for Vata hair type. Massage and keep oil in the hair for at least twenty minutes and steam it by wrapping warm water-soaked towel in the hair. Thereafter, wash the oil with a mild shampoo. 

2. Hair Issues by Pitta Imbalance:

Pitta hair issues can be cured by keeping a cool balance between the head and body. A good way to maintain this balance is by massaging the head as well as the scalp with coconut oil. The person should also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. One effective remedy for pacifying Pitta Dosha is to apply Amalaki paste on the head.  

3. Hair Issues by Kapha Imbalance:

Hair problems in Kapha Dosha need to be cured by regular wash as they tend to become oily soon. It is also essential that the head is given a weekly head massage with either mustard or olive oil. As Kapha hair is much prone to dandruff, one should invest in an excellent herbal hair cleanser to remove dandruff and clean the scalp thoroughly. 

Healthy Hair through Ayurveda, Diet for combating Hair Issues:

Diet of a person impacts a lot on body and mental health. Ayurveda recommends taking in a healthy diet with freshly prepared foods and nutrient-rich foods that is free from preservatives and sugar.

  • For people with Vata Dosha, the person should eat freshly prepared foods made from wholesome ingredients and that are served hot. These foods calm the Vata Dosha and include foods like high-quality oils, pure ghee, warm fluids, fruit berries, melons, yogurt, coconuts, buttermilk, and avocado.
  • For people with Pitta Dosha, fresh foods- cooked or raw are important as they are filled with carbohydrates. Such foods include raw fruits and vegetables, milk, food grains, and cooling spices like fennel, cumin or coriander. 
  • For people with Kapha Dosha, one should eat freshly prepared food with light spices and served hot. Light meals that are not oily and drinking lots of fluids or water are essential for the people.  
Healthy Hair through Ayurveda

 In addition to the above, the following steps should be done:

  • Slow down the pace of regular rush life.
  • Practise self-care.
  • Follow a dedicated routine
  • Calm the mind-body organism
  • Follow a healthy nutritious diet
  • Create a daily hair care routine
  • Practise de-stress activities like Yoga and Pranayama.
  • Follow an exercise regime.

Ayurveda Massage Therapies for Healthy Hair:

Shirodhara therapy includes gently dripping medicinal oils on forehead from a pot hung from the ceiling as the person lies horizontally. This process reduces hair greying, stimulates a sound sleep and cures various health conditions.

Shirovasti therapy requires a person to be seated upright with a head-gear placed on the head the medicinal oils are poured on the cap. The oil is then kept for around 45 minutes and then drained. This process helps in combating stress and nourishes the hair roots.

Shiro lepam therapy is where a medicinal paste is applied to the head part and is covered or bandaged for a certain period of time. this process helps in preventing premature greying of hair and also reduces stress.

Shirobhyanga process involves gently massaging the head neck and shoulders with Ayurvedic medicinal oils. This process nourishes the hair and relaxes the mind.

Ayurveda consists of both topical and systemic hair treatment methods. Topical methods are those that directly nourish the hair and scalp, like oiling. Systemic treatments are those that nourish the body in its entirety to improve the hair growth from within, like diet. There are also Ayurvedic herbal supplements that one can take as a remedy to restore the internal tissues of the scalp and improve hair health and growth. Herbal tablets that contain ingredients like Brahmi, Bhringaraj, Amalaki, Licorice, and hibiscus flowers are good for hair. Triphala tablets and Cyavanprash are also deeply rejuvenating options for healthy hair through Ayurveda.
