Pilates can be done both ways, with or without the equipment. The most basic requirement is obviously the mat, which is usually provided at the gym. For amateurs, the beginner lessons are pretty simple and do not require the use of machines or equipment for exercises. 

However, with an upgrade in learning lessons and moving towards more complex exercises, equipment is necessary. Machines like Wunda which is a padded chair, the Cadillac, spine corrector, a high chair and Magic ring, etc, are generally required for advanced lessons.
