Despite being an injuring practice, micro-needling is an effective treatment for acne scars. Yes. Among all those beauty treatments, it carries an “ouch” part.

Now, many of you will be wondering if micro-needling is worth the pain or not?

Keep reading to know everything about Micro-Needling!!

What is Micro-Needling?

It is one of the well-known skin treatments, which treats the textured acne scars, cellulite, premature ageing, and stretch-marks.

This method is also used to improve the absorption of various skincare ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and retinol.

Most of you may know about a few beauty treatments that change the appearance of the skin by taking off the surface layer of skin. However, micro-needling leaves many small pinpricks in the treated region. When the skin is punctured, it results in trauma, which the body functions and repairs later. This process of repair produces growth factors stimulating collagen production. This is why it is often defined as “collagen induction.”

In atrophic scarring (depressions in the skin), the micro-trauma at the dermis as well as the consequent production of new collagen reduces the skin’s “memory” to scar. Though the scar does not completely disappear, however, the skin will heal with a smoother surface.

3 Devices for Micro-Needling

  • Derma Roller

This device looks like a paint roller with spikes or a miniature lawn aerator. This is a manual tool that is rolled along the skin instead of stamping.

  • Derma Stamp

Derma stamp looks exactly like a derma pen however it is a bit larger. It can be manual or motorized.

  • Derma Pen

This device is like a pen as well as is fitted with a circular head featuring tiny needles. Derma pens are motorized & causes tiny punctures to the skin with a stamping motion.

Does Micro-Needling Actually Work?

There is only one answer to this question, that is, YES.

When this treatment is done properly, it stimulates the growth of new collagen that has the potential to enhance the skin’s appearance.

However, the result may vary based on your skincare problems. Take a look!!

Acne scars: Many researches have illustrated that it is an easy and successful skin treatment for acne scarring however with one limitation: very deep scars.

A 2009 study stated that deep scars don’t respond to micro-needling and also moderately pitted or mild scarring. Deeper scars also do not respond to a laser resurfacing. In most cases, people choose surgery to get rid of them.

Anti-ageing: An anti-ageing regimens involve frequent or even daily use of the micro-needling device. But the repeated injury to the skin without any proper downtime can result in an imbalance in type I & III collagen, which are the two most important types of collagen.

Micro-Needling

Do you know what is the main reason for healthy skin? Your skin looks healthy when your type I & III collagen are balancing. An imbalance of collagen types causes stiffer less radiant skin. And that is why it is recommended to keep significant downtime between your micro-needling treatments. Many sources suggest a minimum of 6 weeks between the micro-needling sessions.

Product absorption: After this treatment, products will more deeply penetrate the skin through the channels that are developed by the needles but this is certainly not a good thing.

Micro-needling effect on both skin healing & collagen is dramatic enough.

It is recommended to use any gentle & minimalist moisturiser sunscreen combo after a micro-needling treatment.

Bottom Line?

You should not always blindly follow the beauty trend.

It is always good to research about new skincare products and treatments. Not all miracle innovations are ultimately effective, safe, or worth the money.

Talking about the micro-needling, the treatment has been studied many times in clinical settings as well as proven as an effective treatment, particularly for acne scars.

You should require a good understanding to safely use a micro-needling device as well.
