So you might be almost nearing your graduation, or you might be fresh out of college. This is a great time to start considering your future career prospects. This can be hard, especially if you really don’t know what you want to do. However, it can help to know what options there are available to fresh graduates, especially the most lucrative ones that are very prestigious. These can often be government jobs, hence they come with a lot of power and social status.
In India, students are often not properly educated on their options. They’re coaxed into specific subject streams by their parents and then left to make up their minds (or often told what they should be interested in). So what are some high-paying, well-respected government jobs you should consider?
IAS and IPS
No doubt your parents are always telling you about these options, but how much do you know about the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS). You do have to pass some rigorous exams to get through, but it’s a well-paying job (entry-level is around 50k) with a lot of perks. You often get involved in matters of policy which are of importance to the nation, depending on your rank.
You can actually have the power to decide things that affect so many people. These jobs come with a huge amount of prestige, and you often get to live in fancy bungalows and get opportunities to get subsidized electricity, among other things. You might also get opportunities to study abroad if you go into foreign service.
Bank Probationary Officer (Bank PO)
If you’ve always wanted to get into banking, a bank PO is perfect. Yes, the work can be a bit challenging but once you get the hang of it you’ll be fine, and you get paid handsomely for your hard work. You might end up working for the big banks like SBI and RBI, or you can also work for Regional and Rural Banks (RRBs). These banks often recruit a lot of graduates and you just need a university degree. It’s a good option if you’re looking for work straight out of college.
Indian Foreign Service
For people who love posting on Instagram with images tagged #wanderlust, this might be your dream job. If you can crack the UPSC Civil Service exams, you can make the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). You’ll spend a lot of your time in foreign countries, but you’ll be able to travel a lot; you won’t spend too much time in one place. You’ll meet lots of new people and really live an international life. You get a huge salary, and a lot of perks, like free medical care and free air tickets, and access to good education for your kids.
If you want to serve your country in this way, you can always sign up at the National Defense Academy. You can enter the army, the navy, or the coast guard. There’s a lot of opportunities to climb the ranks and depending on your position, you might even get paid more than civil servants. A lot of your expenses – food, lodging – are taken care of, and you get a nice pension when you retire.
Scientist or Engineer
If you’re a student of the sciences this is worth considering. Organizations like ISRO and DRDO hire graduates in these fields, and you’ll be actively working in research and development. You often get the benefits of accommodation and food allowances, as well as transport allowances and regular bonuses. You also get to contribute to national issues in a significant way by conducting research in the necessary fields. If you’re a woman, definitely consider this, because there aren’t enough women in these fields!
If you’ve always wanted to be a teacher, this is actually a great option for you. You can consider becoming a professor or a lecturer at a college or university. You get a lot of free time, a high salary, and you get plenty of time to be involved in research in the area of your interest. If you’re an Assistant Professor your starting salary could be 40k going up to 100k. If you have a Ph.D., you’ll be paid more. You’ll also get a chance to shape the young minds of today.
Indian Forest Service
A bit of an unorthodox option, but it’s amazing for you if you kind of hate the city and love wildlife. You are actively contributing to environmental conservation and forest preservation, which are big issues in this urban world. Entry-level salaries are around 50k and you get very good lodging and help. You also get to enjoy some amazing scenic beauty being around all that nature.
Indian Railway Services
If you graduate as an engineer, working in the railway services might be a very good option. However, even if you haven’t done an engineering degree, you might be eligible, because the railways recruit from many disciplines. Working as an officer for the railways, you get access to very good housing and a high salary. You also basically get to play a role in a system that acts as a lifeline for the nation!
You should ultimately pursue whatever career you want to, since job satisfaction is also very important when you’re looking at future paths. But knowing what some of the good options are out there can only help you, especially when things are changing so fast in the world nowadays at such a rapid rate and it can be hard to keep up. But government jobs will always be popular.
