When it comes to fashion, we ladies often comfort ourselves thinking that a little bit of pain or a little bit of cold is okay to tolerate. At the end of the day, all it matters is we should look stunning and fabulous. There is much variation in the fashion world for women, and we love it. When it comes to footwear as well, there are so many types such as flats, peep toes, gladiators, block, wedges, etc.  

However, some of the footwear are pretty uncomfortable to wear, but we ladies barely care about comfort. We are gifted with endurance naturally and we utilize this ability as much as can.

In doing so, when we wear heels that are not comfortable for a long time, we tend to suffer from different foot problems. One such shoe-related feet issue, in general, is the formation of bunions. 

Bunions develop when you wear tight-fitting and narrow shoes for an extended period. However, it doesn’t appear in a few months. Over a few years of time, if you keep wearing shoes that cause discomfort, bunions may start to form. 

A bunion is a bone deformity that occurs due to misalignment on the joint of your big toe as well as the little toe. Bunions can develop in both men and women, but women are more prone to it. These can get painful in severe conditions. Bunions are a progressive deformity, so if medical attention is not given, then it may lead to additional bone formation.

How to find out if I have bunions?

The symptoms of bunions are very subtle to understand. So, to help you deal with it as soon as possible, look out for these symptoms below. 

  • A bulging bump on the side of your big toe or small toe. 
  • The joints prone to bunions look swollen, sore and red. 
  • Pain around the toes.

Risk factors of bunions development

Point to be noted that uncomfortable shoes are not the direct cause behind the appearance of bunions. Scientists are not sure of the exact factor that triggers the formation of bunions. It may be due to a genetic disposition, congenital bone, and joint deformity as well. 

Other causes of bunions involve sprain, fracture or injury in the area, progressing arthritis, gout, etc. 

Wearing heels with narrow toes can increase the possibility of bunions.

People with occupations that put regular stress on their feet such as professional dancers, teachers, medics, police, etc. are highly prone to bunions. 

Further complications due to bunions

The complications due to bunions differ from person to person. Some may not develop any further development with bunions but those who develop further issues due to bunions may experience problems such as trouble in moving the affected toe, pain that comes and goes or stays persistent. In severe situations, some even face issues with walking out of pain.

Other possible complications are 

  • Bursitis: Here, the affected areas get filled with fluid causing inflammation and pain. 
  • Hammertoe: The extension of the bone near the affected toe joint causing pain and discomfort.
  • Metatarsalgia: Swelling of the ball of the feet and causes pain.

Treatment and prevention of bunions

The first thing to do is to visit an orthopedic doctor who has to check your feet, diagnose, and give the required treatment. In rare situations, doctors recommend surgery to rectify the condition. 

If the condition of the condition is mild, then doctors usually advise the patients to wear comfortable shoes or orthopedic shoes, until the condition subsides.

Moreover, you have to forget about your favorite heels or sandals. Doing this is very necessary or else, you won’t be able to walk as you like. Also, our feet take us to places, like literally and you don’t want to mess them up. 

For enhanced comfort, you can also put gel pads inside your shoes which provides extra cushioning. 

Doctors may also prescribe pain-relieving meds if you have unbearable pain. Apart from medications, you can also soak your feet in lukewarm water to help with the pain.

As you can see, the direct cause of bunions is somewhat blurry. As already mentioned above, wearing shoes does not directly cause bunions.

So, if your daily activities involve some serious leg activities for a longer duration, give some love to your feet with a good pair of shoes. This will help you recover with the existing bunions and also prevent any bunions from developing in the future. Wearing hard and uncomfortable makes our feet unhappy. The type of footwear we wear affects our feet a lot more than one can imagine. So, choose wisely!!
