Having curly hair is amazing, but high-maintenance. Gone are the days when everyone went around compulsively straightening their hair, because now we’ve accepted that everyone has different hair types and often, natural hair is often the best for you. You don’t have to sit in front of a mirror every single morning styling your way this way and that. However, curls require a lot of patience; they can tangle and get unruly very easily. As a result, if you’re a curly-haired girl, you should have a good hair-care routine. There are a lot of tips to help you out if you don’t know where to begin!

1) Comb your hair from the tips upward

If you comb your hair from the bottom up, you can avoid the knots that inevitably show up when you drag your comb through your hair from the scalp. Combing a little at a time, slowly moving upwards, will allow you to untangle the knots gently and it doesn’t result in hair damage, rough hair, and unsightly knots. Use a wide-tooth comb, not a brush.

2) Don’t use too much heat

Excess heat (especially without heat-protectant) can damage your hair no matter the hair type. If you have curly hair, the curls could lose their natural shape and become dull and lifeless. If you find you’ve been using too much heat, stop styling your hair as much and let it air dry, and make sure you use some products to let it rehydrate.

3) Use conditioner regularly

Most curly-haired girls find their hair gets a bit dry. Add some conditioner to your hair-styling routine and wash it out later, or use a leave-in conditioner. This will prevent your hair from getting too frizzy and will improve its texture and definition. Make sure not to use too much though!

4) Use the pineapple technique

The pineapple trick involves putting all your hair in a bun or a ponytail at the highest point on your head. This will allow your hair to retain its natural curl pattern and volume, and it won’t be as messy when you wake up in the morning. It’s also great for keeping most of your hair out of your face while you sleep.

5) Know what kind of curls you have

Everyone has a different curl type, in terms of size, texture, volume, and so on. Once you find out what type you have, it can be easier to track down what hair-care routines and products would go well with your hair. Hair is obviously very personal and specific, and what works for your curly-haired friend might not necessarily work as well for you. Make sure you know which products contain silicones, sulphates and so on (many do) and if they’re specifically harmful for your hair type, try to find some products which use more natural ingredients.

6) Trim regularly

Curly hair tends to be quite textured, so you should get your hair trimmed every two months at the most. This can prevent if from looking dull at the ends, and keep it lively and bouncy. You can even get a layered cut to make it look more voluminous.

7) Braid your hair more

Braids not only look great, but it’s a very protective hairstyle for a curly-haired girl. You can try Dutch braids or French braids, maybe using a priming product beforehand to detangle your curls. Braids often look a little lacklustre on thinner, straighter hair, but can look really great on thicker, voluminous hair, so this should work out really well if you’ve got very curly hair.

8) Curl your hair sometimes

Of course, you’ve already got curls, but sometimes they can look a bit dull and you can spice things up with a hair curler. Get an iron that’ll keep your curls the same diameter. Use heat-protectant before you curl your hair, and soon your curls will look as natural as always, but more sleek and well-defined.

Maintaining curly hair can definitely be an uphill battle, and you might be constantly fighting the urge to straighten your hair. But curly hair is just as lovely as straight hair, and you can get away with combing it a lot less often! Even if you don’t regularly style your hair, naturally curly hair, as long as it’s well-kept, still looks great. Hopefully, these tips will help you out with your next hair-care adventure!
