Sexual intimacy isn’t just relegated to physical pleasure, but emotional, psychological and spiritual satisfaction is also achieved. But this temperament doesn’t continue forever, and with age or due to a number of other factors like menopause, it is quite common to notice wane in libido among women.

After menopause, the hormones the progesterone and testosterone decrease, which leads to a decline in sexual energy. Medications are available to boost female libido, but they have their side-effects too, like nausea, low blood pressure, and dizziness.

Ayurveda and Sex

Ayurveda is an ancient science from India, dating back 5000 years. Its origin can be traced back to the Vedas, and even after so many years, it hasn’t required any modification to be adapted in the 21st century. It is a holistic approach to purge maladies from the body by following a sattvic diet, and a disciplined lifestyle according to a person’s dosha. It aims to maintain the Vatas, or energy of the body.

Ayurveda is based on 3 primary pillars of life:

1.       Management of digestion or food

2.       Management of sleep

3.       Management of sexual energy

According to Ayurveda, the world is made of 5 primary elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. In humans the combination of these elements leads to the formation of the 3 doshas:

·         Kapha: Earth and Water

·         Pitta: Fire and Water

·         Vata: Air and Space

Ayurvedic remedies for reviving libido are extremely beneficial. It takes a personalized approach to treat a woman’s sexual problems depending on her dosha.

Frequency of intercourse according to Ayurveda

Women possessing the Kapha dosha are extremely virile and are capable of having frequent intercourse- 2 to 3 times in a week. But they need to be coaxed by their partners to be intimate. To keep their sexual energy high, regular exercise and abstinence from oily food are recommended. Extended foreplay is what gets them interested in getting intimate.

Those who have Pitta dosha are energetic but can burn out much easier, and they are recommended to have sex about once a week. They are extremely visual and are highly interested in sex but because of their weaker constituency, it is essential to pace themselves.

People with Vata dosha have the desire but because of their constitution their energy can get exhausted much easily, hence, they are prescribed to get intimate every other week. Such women usually suffer from dry vagina, dry skin, scanty menstruation, and generally low libido. To overcome these maladies, you should drink coconut water, fruits and incorporate ghee in your regular diet. Those with Vata dosha are extremely creative and getting intimate in usual places, or being surprised by their partners will help in igniting their sexual desire.

Ayurvedic practitioners believe that the frequency of sex depends on the season. The body is said to possess maximum energy during winters, and copulation every alternate day is highly suggested during this time.

During the months of spring and autumn, the stamina is at a moderate level, and couples can get sexually intimate twice a week. While during summers, the strength is at a minimal level, and the frequency of sex can be every other. Also, according to Ayurvedic science, sex should be avoided during sunrise and sunset and should be performed during the Kapha hours of the day.

Ayurveda revolves around the flow and circulation of vital energy, Ojas. In this ancient science, the different facets of sex depend on 3 out of the 7 dhatus or essential tissues- Rasa, Rakta and Shukra.

Ayurveda prescribes spiced milk after sex

Orgasm is the release of pent up sexual energy, and Ayurvedic practitioners believe that coitus can lead to the depletion of the all important Ojas, which is also required to maintain mental and physical strength as well as immunity. To replenish the Ojas, post-sex women are recommended to have ghee, rice pudding, coconut water, bone marrow broth, and milk.

The regular consumption of spice milk will make women feel revitalized. To make this potent an aphrodisiac drink you would need to boil a cup of milk along with almonds, dates, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and a pinch of saffron.
